COMPREHENSIVE NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION
An evaluation typically consists of the following:
Initial intake session with parents: This 1.5 hour session is used to discuss the presenting concerns and gather a detailed developmental, social, educational, and medical history.
School/classroom observation: In certain circumstances, an observation of the child in his or her school setting can be a helpful component of the evaluation process.
Testing: The actual testing takes several hours and may be spread out over separate sessions, depending on the age of the child. It consists of different paper-and-pencil tests, hands-on activities, and question-and-answer style problems, puzzles, or brain-teasers. The areas evaluated typically include:
Feedback: During this 1.5 hour session, we present parents with the findings from the evaluation with a focus on developing an action plan with parents regarding how to help their child moving forward. It is our top priority that all parents leave this session with a greater understanding about what is troubling their child as well as an appreciation for their strengths and talents, and a clear roadmap of how to proceed. We will make every effort following this session to connect parents with the right providers and we will remain available for follow-up debriefing/consultation with parents, educators, or other treating professionals.
Report: Approximately 2-4 weeks following the feedback session, parents will receive a report containing the evaluation results and recommendations, written in clear and easy-to-understand language. In certain circumstances reports can also be expedited to meet deadlines.
Follow-up consultation: With parents’ consent, we can help arrange for a school or treatment team meeting to discuss the evaluation results and ensure that everyone is on the same page and providing support in a coordinated and consistent manner.
In addition to comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, we also provide the following services:
EARLY CHILDHOOD AND PRESCHOOL EVALUATIONS
Dr. Mike is an expert in the identification of developmental problems that present in early childhood, including sensory integration or processing challenges, language and communication delays, and social interaction or behavioral issues. Because of the age of the child these evaluations are typically shorter, but equally comprehensive, and may also involve collaboration with a speech-language pathologist.
CONSULTATIVE SERVICES AND RECORD REVIEW
We provide assistance to parents who are not interested in an evaluation but may need help in interpreting prior testing reports, reviewing IEPs and other school documents, and/or prioritizing treatment or educational planning options. We also work collaboratively with a robust network of skilled and compassionate specialists, including clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, learning specialists/tutors, ABA therapists, and educational advocates and attorneys, and when needed, can help connect parents with an appropriate provider in their area.
WORKSHOPS/PRESENTATIONS
We routinely present to parents, educators, and healthcare professionals on various topics related to child development, learning and psychiatric disorders, and neuropsychological assessment.
